What scarifying does
Over time a mat of dead grass stems, roots and moss builds up at the base of a lawn. A thin layer is normal. A thick one holds water at the surface, stops feed and air getting down, and gives moss somewhere to take hold. Scarifying uses rotating blades to cut into that layer and lift it out, so the grass can grow into the space.
It is not a treatment you do to a perfect lawn. It is for lawns that feel soft and springy underfoot, are patchy with moss, or have stopped responding to feeding.
What to expect afterwards
A scarified lawn looks worse before it looks better. The surface is opened up, there will be thin and bare patches where the moss was, and the colour can look pale for a while. That is why we pair scarifying with overseeding and a feed wherever the lawn is thin. Lawn Recovery and Lawn Restoration do exactly that.
We bag the debris. It is left on site for you to dispose of, or we can take it away for an extra charge.
When we scarify
The best windows are early autumn and spring, when the grass is growing and can recover. We avoid scarifying drought-stressed grass in late summer and any lawn that is waterlogged or frozen. If your lawn is not ready, we will say so and book the visit for when it is.
Read the lawn care guides for the full reasoning on timing, and how to tell whether you have too much thatch.
Access
Our scarifier is mains electric, so we need a power point within extension-lead reach of the lawn. An outdoor socket is ideal; one through a door or window is fine.
Price
Scarifying on its own is the Lawn Refresh: from £75 for a 25 m² lawn and about £135 for 100 m².
Questions
How much does scarifying cost?
A Lawn Refresh (scarify only) is from £75 for a 25 m² lawn and about £135 for 100 m². The price guide on the lawn restoration page shows every size up to 1,000 m².
Will scarifying damage my lawn?
It removes the thatch and moss, and the lawn will look thinner for a few weeks. Healthy grass recovers, and we usually overseed and feed straight afterwards to speed that up.
Do I need to be at home?
Not necessarily, as long as we can reach the lawn and a power point. Message us to arrange it.
