Lawn care in Ash

Ash sits between two very different landscapes: deep silty brickearth ground around the village and the flat, ditch-drained Ash Level beside the Stour to the north.

Ash is a village and parish about three miles west of Sandwich, and the parish stretches a long way: it takes in Westmarsh, Ware, Hoaden and Richborough, with the Ash Level and the River Stour forming its northern part. That spread matters for a lawn, because the ground changes within a short drive.

Dover District's landscape assessment describes the land around Ash village as mostly head brickearth, with soils that are deep, well drained, often stoneless, fine and silty. It also notes that some of this ground is fine and loamy over slowly permeable subsoil, with slight seasonal waterlogging. As general guidance, fine silty soil is lovely to garden on but it can pack down and form a skin under foot traffic and mowing. Hollow-tine aeration in autumn or spring lets water and air through that skin, and is usually the first job worth doing on a tired Ash lawn.

North of the village the picture changes. The same assessment says the Ash Level is dominated by marine (estuarine) alluvium under seasonally wet, deep, stoneless, mainly calcareous clayey soils, and that groundwater there is controlled by ditches and pumps. A garden on or near that low ground is likely to hold water through winter and stay soft late into spring. If yours does, avoid heavy mowing or scarifying while it is sodden, and aerate rather than rake when the surface has firmed up. Our guide to lawns on East Kent soils covers how clay and silt behave differently.

Ash is also an old village. Wikipedia records many medieval buildings, Tudor cottages in the same lane, and a Grade I listed church with parts from the 12th century. The assessment adds that Ash and its neighbours mix modern brick houses with older types that have Flemish gable ends and thatch. Older plots like these tend to be smaller and often have mature hedges, fruit trees or walls close by. Hedges and shade take light and moisture from turf, so thin patches under them usually respond better to overseeding with a shade-tolerant mix than to heavy feeding.

Ash is known for its market gardens, and the landscape around it is a patchwork of orchards, polytunnels and poplar windbreaks. Those windbreaks give enclosure and shelter, but they also mean some gardens get dappled or afternoon shade. If moss has taken hold, scarifying in early autumn removes it and the thatch beneath, and a steady seasonal routine such as our annual plan keeps it from coming straight back.

Questions

Why does my lawn in Ash stay wet in winter?

It depends which side of the village you are on. Around Ash village the soils are mostly deep brickearth, but some have slowly permeable subsoil that can waterlog seasonally. On the low Ash Level to the north, the ground is estuarine alluvium and clayey, and the area relies on ditches and pumps for drainage. As general guidance, aerating in autumn and keeping off wet turf helps either way.

Is autumn or spring better for scarifying a lawn in Ash?

On the free-draining silty ground around the village, early autumn is the usual choice because the soil is still warm and new seed establishes quickly. Low-lying, wetter gardens are best left until the surface has firmed up, whatever the calendar says. Our when to scarify guide has the detail.

My Ash garden is shaded by an old hedge. Can I still have a lawn?

Usually yes, with realistic expectations. A shade-tolerant seed mix, a slightly higher cut and a little overseeding each autumn can keep the turf going. Very dense shade under evergreen hedging may never grow a thick lawn, and it is better to say so than to keep reseeding.
