Wikipedia describes Ramsgate as lying in a shallow valley between two chalk cliffs, known as the East Cliff and the West Cliff, both mostly residential. That shape matters for a lawn. The Isle of Thanet is chalk country, and its geology notes record brickearth, a silty deposit, lying in many of the shallow chalk valleys. As general guidance, lawns on the cliff tops tend to drain quickly and dry out first in summer, while lawns lower down the valley can hold more moisture and compact more easily. A spade-deep hole will tell you which you have. Our guide to lawns on East Kent soils explains what each soil does.
The town has many Regency and Victorian buildings, around 900 listed buildings in all, and Historic England named Ramsgate one of its first ten Heritage Action Zones in 2017. Gardens behind older terraces are often compact, enclosed by walls and shaded by the buildings around them. In general, a lawn that gets only a few hours of direct sun thins out and goes mossy. Scarifying lifts the moss and dead thatch, and overseeding with a shade-tolerant mix puts density back. Be realistic about deep shade: grass will never be as thick there as in full sun.
Climate is the other local fact. The Manston weather station, about two miles west of the town centre, records roughly 600 mm of rain a year, which Wikipedia compares to the driest parts of England, and over 1,800 hours of sunshine. A sunny, low-rainfall spot means summer drought stress is the usual pressure on Ramsgate lawns. General guidance: raise the mowing height in dry spells, relieve compaction with hollow-tine aeration in autumn, and sow in early September so seed has warmth and moisture. Our how to overseed guide covers the steps.
Cliff-top promenades and parks run along both sides of the town, so many gardens are open to wind off the sea. Exposed lawns dry faster and can look patchy by late summer even when well kept. If yours has gone beyond a tidy-up, lawn restoration brings together scarifying, overseeding and feeding in one visit. If you would rather spread the work across the year, the annual plan sets out what is done and when. We work in Ramsgate and the surrounding Thanet towns; message us with your address and a photo of the lawn.

Questions
Will my Ramsgate lawn dry out faster than one inland?
Often, yes. Ramsgate sits on chalk, which drains freely, and the nearest weather station records only about 600 mm of rain a year. As general guidance, keep the mower blades higher in summer, aerate in autumn and avoid cutting short in a dry spell.
My terrace garden is shaded by walls and neighbouring houses. Is it worth overseeding?
It can be, if you use a shade-tolerant seed mix and clear moss and thatch first. In deep shade grass stays thinner than in sun, so the aim is a healthier lawn rather than a bowling green.
Do you cover the cliff-top and harbour areas as well?
Yes, we cover all of Ramsgate. Send your address and a photo so we can tell you what the lawn needs.
